PICNIC PLANNING TIPS

Whether in the park or in your own backyard, there’s nothing more delightful than a picnic. Let us share a few tips to make yours perfect.

No matter whether the sun is shining or Mother Nature is giving you her worst, there’s nothing more delightful than a picnic. While relaxing on a blanket in the middle of a park sounds wonderful, you can easily have the perfect picnic in your living room or your own backyard.

We always have our picnic basket (which we’ve used for years) ready to go. If you don’t have a basket readily available, feel free to use a nice big tote bag.

Keeping the environment in mind, be sure to pack reusable dishes and cups. That way you can bring them back home and toss them in the dishwasher to be cleaned. We like to have a set that is just for picnics. After they’re clean, we just put them back in our picnic basket so they’re ready for our next adventure.

Cloth napkins are great, as well. Use them, bring them home, clean them and they’re all set for your next picnic. We like our napkins to be nice and big (like these Oversized Linen Napkins) so that you can not only eat on them, if necessary, but so that they can tackle any mess you encounter. A few extra napkins would be a helpful addition, as well.

We always bring our handy dandy Dish Towel Utensil Organizer with us. It’s such an easy way to sort the flatware you’ll need. When you’re ready to pack up and head home, place the dirty utensils back in it knowing that a quick run though the washer and dryer is all it needs to be cleaned.

Don’t forget the picnic blanket. It can even double as a tablecloth if you find a nice picnic table at the park.

Depending on what delicious food you’ll be enjoying on your picnic, make sure you have essentials such as forks, knives and spoons packed and ready to go. However, so many times we forget to bring what we need to serve the food. Spatulas, tongs and serving spoons or forks are just as essential as the eating utensils. Are you having a barbecue? Make sure you pack what you need for that, too. Don’t forget a garbage bags or two…just in case.

To keep everything organized and neat, we like to place our food (like our Classic Deviled Eggs) in reusable containers, when possible. That way we can easily transport everything to and from our destination. A small cooler is perfect for any items that need to be refrigerated. Instead of using individual ice packs, we fill a small reusable container with ice cubes, which is then set in the bottom of the cooler. That way we’ll also have ice handy, albeit slightly melted, for any cold beverages, as well.

While we love finding a spot at a park here in Celebration or by our favorite lake nearby, sometimes we just set up camp in our own living room. Charlotte just loves living room picnics. Move the furniture out of the way (carefully, of course), lay down a blanket and enjoy a nice, relaxing meal with the ones you love.

ORANGE & FIELD TIP: There’s nothing more perfect for a picnic than an actual picnic basket. You’d be surprised how many great (and affordable) ones you can find at your local antique store.
